Best Ramen in Town

There is a small noodle bar at Orchard Plaza that few Singaporeans would know of. Tucked in a narrow corner on the ground floor of a building full of dodgy Karaoke bars and shops offering foot reflexology services, Ken's Noodle House is a real treat, away from those ubiquitious Sushi restaurant chain. It serves probably the best Ramen in town. Customers here are mostly Japanese, and it does have the vibe of an authentic Japanese noodle house. Whilst the menu is basic and as unassuming as its interior, a meal at Ken's is as satisfying as it is light on your pocket.

Do try Ken's "Char Siew Ramen" - those springy hand-made Ramen in a special Miso soup mix will surely make you clamour for more.

Then, there is an interesting dish served in a bowl consisting of sushi rice, marinated fish roe, preserved bamboo shoot and seaweed - mix the concoction together, wrap it with the seaweed paper and enjoy. It's simply mouth-watering!

Good Fakes

Koreans love Chanel. Both real and fake. These days, it's hard to tell the difference. Fake goods from Seoul are so good that would make one question why get the real thing. Take this bracelet for example, would you have thought this is a fake, and cost S$50? Perhaps so but it matters not to many young ladies in Singapore. A store called "The Dresser", owned and run by a mother-and-daughter team (hailed from Korea) knows this well. New arrivals from Seoul are met with undying enthusiasm every week. There is a certain consistent following that is almost like a cult. It has a repeat crowd and the number is growing. Business is brisk, and profit margin should be great. I suspect they profit a dollar for a dollar for every piece of garment sold. Barely half a year, this hip mother-and-daughter team, now owns two other stores in the same mall, all carrying Seoul made clothes and accessories. With each store being slightly different in concept, they maximize their daily takings through clever product differentiation. Not bad at all.

Last Christmas at One Balmoral

The first and the last christmas at One Balmoral had only spanned 2 years. Yes, 24 months! Like many real estates in Singapore, One Balmoral was not spared from the enbloc wave that swept the Singapore property market. So, we are moving out soon. Yet again! For more than a decade, Chef C. had lived a nomadic life, never stayed in a single dwelling place for more than 2 years. Living life out of a suitcase, until One Balmoral came along. So, last Christmas at One Balmoral has a special meaning. Good food, good wine and good company!

First Christmas At One Balmoral

It was 24 Dec 2005, not long after we moved into One Balmoral. My very first time hosting dinner complete with table setting in Singapore. I had hosted many dinners before in my apartment in Hong Kong, but never a Western-styled menu with formal table setting like this. Nothing really spectacular on the menu, but enough for first-time impression. Appetizers consisted of a selection of cheese and cold cuts, as well as escargos. Guests were treated to a choice of cream of mushroom or seafood soup. The main event was grilled tenderloin, and dessert was poached pears. Dinners at Huth had become more sophisticated since, as the menus in my earlier post show.

Chef C.'s Wannabe Lunch Menu

Finally, a posting that fits the theme for the blog.Unfortunately, Chef C. did not take any photos of her wonderful creations, to prove that she's indeed a gourmet in the making. But satisfied guests have asked for more. That, i think, is a sign that perhaps there is hope. The first menu here was created for a special lunch, as a tribute to my former boss' retirement from Citi. The second menu was a simple lunch menu for Yan's family get-together last June. There were of course many lunches and dinners since, at Huth (my humble kitchen). But no formal menu was created to document the works. Looking forward to post pictures of some of the dishes that Chef C. had whipped up at Huth and the accompanying table settings.

Bargain hunting at Angelux

What a fruitful morning at Angelux today. S$340 for the entire "loot", imagine that! And the latest Marc Jacobs' spring collection! Can one beat that? Do not be fooled by the nondescript shop and its uninspiring interior, Angelux is a shopping mecca for many Tai Tais in Singapore. A place where one can stretch the dollar, and where VIPs get additional 10-15% discount. To be on Angelux's loyal clientele list, one just need to be a consistent shopper, as you would have expected. No privilege card will be issued, but they know who is and who isn't a target customer. Be forewarned, a visit to Angelux can be a dangerous proposition!

This Marc Jacob tote bag is this week's hot item. I was told that almost every customer who dropped by this week had picked this one up. A practical design using light-weight material, and an irresistable price, gives it a winning formula. I have great plans with this overnight travel bag.

This Karren Miller "bomber jacket"-styled top is yet another great find today, that I am extremely pleased with.

Got these two cute T-shirts from a different shop at the same mall, at 50% off the original price. I was told they were sourced from Hong Kong, and the pictures on the garment were hand-sewn. When paired with a denim vest (part of my Angelux hunt today), it's absolutely chic!

Make no mistake, great finds are not things that matter....but bargain shopping is!

Tearing Down History

Construction has finally started! An entirely new experience for Yan and I - from design conception, working together with architects and contractors, to dealing with land and tax authorities. TOP scheduled for end Dec (hopefully in time for a huge Christmas party!). My newfound respect for architects - their job is definitely not easy, and certainly not worth the number of years studying for the degree.

Starting a blog

It has taken me unusually long to get started on this. I wasn't sure of the content to work on, the purpose of the blog, the host, etc. How typical of me. And here I am, crafting my first posting....
